According to a study, transgenic mice with partial functional loss of a protein involved in gene expression, called the transactive response DNA binding protein 43 kDa (TDP-43), displayed symptoms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and humans with ALS displayed similar patterns of TDP-43 dysfunction, suggesting that TDP-43 dysfunction may contribute to neurodegeneration in humans with ALS.
