Melting ice may be moving more algae in the Arctic

As Arctic sea ice was declining to its lowest levels ever recorded last year, researchers discovered a large amount of algae growing beneath it. Antje Boetius and colleagues aboard the research vessel Polarstern identified the algae as the diatom Melosira arctica and now report that strands of it were hanging from the bottom of the region’s seasonally-fluctuating ice across a wide latitudinal range.
