Southward excursions of Arctic water and transition to Ice Age

Progressive southward advances and retreats of cold Arctic water likely triggered regional cooling and accelerated the transition into the most recent glacial age, a study finds. Prior to the most recent 11,000 years, a time of climatic quiescence that allowed humans to flourish, the last extended warm period on Earth occurred during the interglacial period around 125,000 years ago.
