Nervous system involvement in asthma

A study in a mouse model of asthma demonstrates that sensory neurons in the lungs are key mediators of airway constrictions characteristic of an acute asthma attack, suggesting a need to develop asthma treatments that target the nervous system rather than only the immune system. People with asthma suffer chronic lung obstructions due to excessive mucus production as well as acute attacks in which allergens can cause airways to constrict.
