Individual fusion with group identity in conflict

A study of revolutionary fighters during the 2011 Libyan conflict finds that fighters felt bonded with their battalions as strongly as with their own families. Identity fusion refers to a visceral sense of oneness between personal and group identities and is thought to underlie an individual’s willingness to sacrifice for a group, even if the group does not comprise close kinsmen.
