Human colonization of the remote Pacific islands may have spawned the global extinction of nearly 1,000 species of large-bodied, flightless birds known as non-passerine landbirds, according to a study. Species have vanished at unprecedented rates in the years since 10,000 BC, an age known as the Holocene.
