By analyzing in-depth audio and video recordings of a child’s daily life at home from 9-24 months of age, researchers report that the earliest words produced by the child are those consistently used by caregivers in distinct places, times of day, and topics of conversation, suggesting that such words are among the easiest to learn and underscoring the importance of context for early language acquisition.
