As snow cover shrinks, white hares spend increased time on brown terrain

Climate change might turn the snowshoe hare’s camouflage coat from lifesaver to liability, according to a study. Snowshoe hares molt seasonally so that their coat color—brown or white—tracks the presence of snow and helps conceal the animals from predators. Scott Mills and colleagues determined that the adaptation might prove detrimental to the hares during the next century as rising temperatures shorten snow seasons and shrink snow cover.
