Sixty-five refractory septic shock patients were randomly assigned and controlled to a group achieving a low or high temperature range (36.0−37.5 °C vs. 37.5−38.3 °C) for 72 hours by physical methods. The lactate level and 28d mortality were significantly higher in the former group compared to the latter. Excessively controlling fever may be harmful to the outcome of refractory septic shock patients.
