Getting to the root of an itch

Researchers have discovered a key molecule that all itch receptor cells need to communicate with both the brain and the neural circuit required for itch-signaling. The molecule is a small neuropeptide called Nppb -- take it away and there is no itch. But inject it in the right place, and the itch comes back.
