Pebbles help explain Mars’ aqueous past

Providing the most definitive proof yet of ancient river flow on Mars, a new study reports the discovery of conglomerates -- pebbles mixed with sand, and turned to rock -- in the sediment at Mars’ Gale Crater. Though current conditions on the cold, dry Martian planet do not support the long-term existence of liquid water, the presence of a variety of landforms, including deltas and giant channels, suggests this liquid once was there.
