Macaques are attuned to rhythmic communication

A study finds that monkeys, like humans, converse best when communication follows a natural cadence, supporting the theory that modern human speech evolved from the rhythmic facial expressions used during communication by ancestral primates. Human speech is most easily understood when syllables are produced at a steady, 3-8 Hz rhythm; artificial mouth and facial movements that disrupt this tempo reduce intelligibility.
