Scary smells make more of an impression

“A rose by any other name would smell as sweet,” wrote Shakespeare. But, a new study with mice suggests that an electrified rose might smell even stronger. Marley Kass and colleagues discovered that signals from the rodents’ olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) -- the first cells to interact with odor molecules in the nose -- were enhanced after the animals learned to associate a smell with a fearful memory.
