Gut mcrobes influence autoimmunity risk, via sex hormones

In mice, the assortment of microbes inhabiting the gut influences levels of sex hormones and, in turn, the development of the autoimmune disease type 1 diabetes, researchers report. The findings may shed light on why autoimmune disorders, such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis, tend to be more common in women than in men.
