Coevolution of Helicobacter pylori and human gastric cancer risk

A study finds that the risk of developing gastric cancer from Helicobacter pylori bacteria may depend on the genomes of both pathogen and host, due to coevolution. In the Colombian mountain village of Tuquerres, gastric cancer occurs 25 times more frequently than in the coastal village of Tumaco, despite similar rates of H. pylori infection.
