Reputation in group cooperation

Reputation may provide an incentive to contribute toward a publicly-accessible community resource, according to a study. The long-studied “tragedy of the commons” problem states that cooperation is unlikely to arise when a collective benefit for all can be produced by the effort and at the cost of only a few. In such a situation, there is little incentive for community members to cooperate unless cooperators reap some benefit.
