Malaria transmission shaped by sex in mosquitoes?

Sexual selection among Anopheles gambiae mosquitoes -- the main vector of malaria -- may explain why this particular species spreads the deadly disease to humans so effectively, according to a new study. Researchers have known that the male A. gambiae “mating plug” delivers a suite of chemicals to the female, including sperm and the steroid hormone 20E, the latter of which increases egg production and decreases immunity in the females.
