Millions of breast cancer patients undertake insidious sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) to establish the metastatic nature of the disease. Researchers from Washington University in STL, USA in collaboration with the 4th Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University, China now use luminescent carbon nanoparticles (7nm) for real-time, non-invasive high-resolution photoacoustic imaging of SLN. A commercially acquiescent process is revealed from food grade honey offering rapid lymphatic transport and great potential for faster and safer resection of SLN.
