A study demonstrates the presence of cats in the agricultural village of Quanhucun, China 5,300 years ago, and provides evidence for commensal relationships between cats and people. Domestic cats are known from 4,000-year-old Egyptian art, and the discovery of a wildcat buried near a human in Cyprus approximately 9,500 years ago provided some evidence for ancient human-cat relationships, but the process of cat domestication remains poorly understood.
