Binary math in French Polynesia centuries before Leibniz

The residents of Mangareva, a small island in French Polynesia, used a type of binary number system centuries before the idea was proposed by German mathematician and philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, according to a study. Although Leibniz's theory laid the foundation for computing with machines, humans largely continued to use number systems built on base 10, prompting researchers to ponder whether binary number systems are compatible with human cognition.
